"He says that he's an a-hole, but he's not, and I'm quoting him here, '100% a dick.'"
"Do you believe him?"
"I don't know that I believe anyone is 100% a dick, ma'am."
―Rhomann Dey and Irani Rael[src]

Rhomann Dey is a member of the Nova Corps and contact to Star-Lord and the Guardians of the Galaxy. He was promoted to the rank of Denarian due to his actions during the Battle of Xandar.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Rhomann Dey married a Krylorian woman, with whom he had a daughter. He joined the Nova Corps and progressed to the rank of Millenian.[1] During his time with the Nova Corps, Dey was trained in combat medicine.[2] He had once arrested Star-Lord before for petty theft.[1]

Mission on Sy'gyl[]

"I guess I don't really believe in killing, period. Was it that obvious?"
"Yeah. That's not a bad thing."
"What? Not bad that it's obvious, or not bad that I don't believe in killing?"
"Both."
―Rhomman Dey and Vers[src]

As the war between the Kree and Xandar continued, Dey was ordered by Nova Prime to go to Sy'gyl and ensure that the Kree Starforce was successful in stealing the plans for the Axiom Cannon which the Nova were using, since Nova Prime believed that the only way to reach peace was for both sides to have the same technology. Dey came across Vers, who grabbed his throat and threatened him. Dey convinced Vers to release him and explained his mission, which Vers said was worse than hers. Dey asked where Vers' extraction point was, and she pointed in the correct direction. Dey said that they would need to take care of her leg, explaining that his training in combat medicine could help stop her bleeding. Vers sat down and let him treat her wound as she passed out.

Vers woke up fifteen minutes later, and Dey explained what he did for her leg. Vers complimented Dey's work before the two realized that the forest was on fire, so they started running toward a clearance of rocks. Vers asked why they were not killing each other, so Dey explained that he did not believe in killing, causing Vers to realize that he had never killed anyone. As they neared the edge, the two were stopped by a Xandarian warrior who Dey said was not with the Nova Corps. Dey guessed that the Xandarian was playing with them, so Vers stood up and used her photon blasts against them, impressing Dey. Dey asked about her abilities and showed Vers as the Xandarian turned into a Skrull, with Dey explaining that the Skrulls had arrived on the planet shortly after Starforce had.

As the two continued moving, Dey commented on the surprising presence of vegetation despite the lava. Vers pointed to where her ship was, and Dey explained that he did not want to meet the rest of Starforce. Vers realized that he was hiding something, so Dey explained that she was chosen for the mission because she was the least likely to kill without question. Yon-Rogg appeared and commented on how loud they were and appraoached them, along with Bron-Char and a Skrull impersonating Sun-Val. Yon-Rogg thanked Dey for helping Vers, and the two men agreed that nothing happened that day. Vers and Dey thanked each other before parting ways.[2]

Arresting Star-Lord[]

"Hey, if it isn't Star-Prince."
"Star-Lord!"
"Oh right sorry, Lord. I picked this guy up a while back for petty theft, he's got a code-name."
―Rhomann Dey and Star-Lord[src]

Dey arresting Star-Lord in a public place

In 2014, Dey and his partner arrested Peter Quill again on Xandar along with Gamora, Rocket Raccoon and Groot for fighting in the center of Xandar. As Dey took Quill into custody, he mistakenly referred to Quill as Star-Prince, much to Quill's annoyance. When Quill insisted that Star-Lord was not a code-name but an outlaw name, Dey continued to tease him, explaining to his partner how he had arrested Quill a while back for petty theft.

Dey introduces the inmates to Garthan Saal

Dey took Star-Lord and the others back to the Nova Corps Headquarters and explained their crimes to Denarian Garthan Saal. Once all the criminals had been introduced and their crimes explained, Saal ordered him to transfer the prisoners to the Kyln.[1] Dey argued that the Kyln may be too violent a prison for these inmates; Saal showed his authority and insisted that their local cells were not enough to hold the prisoners, so the Kyln would have to do.[3]

Battle of Xandar[]

"Do you believe that he's here to help?"
"Yeah."
Irani Rael and Rhomann Dey[src]

Star-Lord escaped from the Kyln with the help of the other prisoners and Drax the Destroyer. A few days after going missing, Quill contacted Dey at his home and informed him of the Guardians of the Galaxy's plan to stop the Kree warmonger, Ronan the Accuser, from destroying Xandar with the Orb, an incredibly powerful Infinity Stone he acquired on Knowhere.

Dey speaking to Irani Rael about Peter Quill

Dey rushed back to the Nova Corps Headquarters and informed Nova Prime Irani Rael of the message. Although Denarian Garthan Saal insisted that the message was nothing more than a trick, Rael knew that Dey knew Quill personally and asked him to give his opinion. Dey explained that he believed that Star-Lord was sincere in his wish to help and Rael accepted this, sending Saal to lead the Nova Corps in a counterattack. He witnessed the Battle of Xandar from the control room.[1]

Aftermath[]

Dey watching the Guardians of the Galaxy leave

"I have a family, they're alive because of you. Your criminal records have also been expunged; however, I have to warn you against breaking any laws in the future."
―Rhomann Dey to the Guardians of the Galaxy[src]

Rhomann Dey was promoted to the rank of Denarian, replacing Garthan Saal who had died during the battle. He presented the Guardians with their rebuilt ship, the Milano. He explained to Peter Quill how their actions had saved the lives of his wife and daughter, thus allowing him to clear their criminal records, although both Rocket Raccoon and Drax the Destroyer questioned what crimes they would be able to commit.

Dey returns to his home, greeted by his family

As he watched the Guardians of the Galaxy leave Xandar, Dey commented that it may not have been the best idea to allow Quill and the other Guardians to go free into the universe. Dey then returned home to his wife and daughter, grateful that they were still alive and he could continue his life with his beloved family. As soon as he walked through the door, his daughter jumped into his arms while his wife kissed him.[1]

Personality[]

Rhomann Dey is an honorable, family man. Dey is loyal to his superiors and has a bit of an attitude towards others like Star-Lord, but after the battle on Xandar, he seemed to be able to trust him and the other members of the Guardians of the Galaxy. He is hesitant to kill people, and expressed to Vers that he did not believe in killing. However, he was still willing to fight to protect his people and ensure peace.

Abilities[]

  • Tactician: Dey is great at formulating plans and putting his trust in people. This helped give him the promotion to Denarian for his actions in the Battle of Xandar. When he got a message from Star-Lord warning him about Ronan's invasion, he trusted Star-Lord despite previously arresting him. Without this decision, Xandar would have been destroyed.
  • Pilot: Dey is capable of flying a ship, arriving by air to detain Star-Lord, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot.
  • Physician: Dey was trained in combat medicine by the Nova Corps. He saw that Vers had been stabbed in the leg and successfully bandaged the wound, stopped the bleeding, and gave her medicine to ease the pain for an extended period of time, long enough for Vers to return to her ship.
